First Steps in Music is a curriculum developed by Dr. John Feierabend, Chair of the Music Education Department at Hartt School of Music in Hartford CT.

Over the past twenty five years, Dr. Feierabend has gathered children’s songs and rhymes from our elders and compiled them into this early childhood music program in an attempt to preserve the rich repertoire of traditional and folk literature, and to enable today’s families to recall and learn songs and rhymes that have nurtured wonder and joy in children for generations.

Judy Fricke has been an Early Childhood Music Educator using Dr. Feierabend’s methods for the past seventeen years. She is thrilled to be in Bangor to continue sharing her love for music and children at The Main Street Music Studios.

“Although the First Steps in Music curriculum contains numerous pre-literacy and pre-music skills, the focus of this program is the relationship between the child and the caregiver. The importance of reading to a child and exposing them to music at a young age cannot be over emphasized. But it is in the act of holding that child while reading to them and rocking that child while singing them to sleep that establishes the incredible bond which creates security and confidence as the child grows older.” Judy Fricke
